To begin the budget process, the Morenci City Council met as a Council Committee of the Whole in February 2016. During the meeting, City Councilors discussed goals for the next year, three (3) years, and five (5) years. Those goals were then decided upon, and were the cornerstone of the budget document when the City administration put together the budget for the next fiscal year.
This year the revenue for the City of Morenci increased as property values in the City increased for the second time in six (6) years. Previously the City had seen a decrease in 20 million in taxable value dating back to 2010. To help counter the decrease and help ensure that General Fund stays healthy, the Morenci City Council chose to refinance debt to lower debt payments in 2014. By refinancing debt, the City of Morenci was able to free up roughly $53,000 that could be budgeted towards immediate needs by extending the life of the debt by three (3) years. The decreased debt payments and the increase in taxable value have allowed the City to start providing additional services that were eliminated the past few years. Here is a list of what the Fiscal Year 2016 - 2017 Budget attempts to accomplish:
#1 - Continuation of 24 hour / seven (7) day a week police service
#2 - Purchase of two (2) sets of turn-out gear for the Morenci Fire Department and the purchase of new hydraulic pumps for the JAWS of Life
