The Morenci City Council passed an ordinance on April 25, 2016 that allows for golf carts to be driven on City of Morenci streets year-round. The ordinance requires golf cart operators to register their golf cart with the Morenci Police Department prior to use. The ordinance will take effect May 7, 2016, and the registering of golf carts will begin on May 9, 2016.

There are several items that golf cart operators should know prior to operating a golf cart on City streets. The following are important reminders:

    • There is a one (1) year sunset clause on the Morenci Golf Cart Ordinance. The ordinance will be valid for one (1) year (until May 7, 2017), unless the Morenci City Council decides to make it a permanent ordinance.
    • Golf cart registration is valid for the calendar year in which the golf cart has been registered. Golf carts must have a registration sticker affixed to the front of the golf cart.
    • Only licensed drivers are allowed to operate golf carts on City streets, and the drivers must be 16 years of age or older.
    • Golf carts can be operated 30 minutes after sunrise until 30 minutes before sunset, and shall be operated only during weather free of snow and / or ice. All other times are prohibited.
    • Golf carts cannot be operated on M-156, nor can they be operated on streets with a speed limit over 30 miles per hour. Golf carts can cross M-156, though.
    • Golf carts are to be operated on the nearest to the right side of the roadway as practicable, but cannot be operated on a sidewalk.
    • Golf carts are not to exceed 15 miles per hour.
    • The operator of the golf cart shall obey by all sections pertaining to traffic in the Michigan Vehicle Code.
