​Morenci City Council will hold a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 15, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, located at 118 Orchard St. Morenci, MI.
The Morenci American Legion​ will lead the Memorial Day remembrance ceremonies which include a prayer and 21-gun salute at Wakefield Park, followed by a parade through town, leading to a service at Oak Grove Cemetery. A pause is taken at the Bean Creek bridge for a 21-gun salute and dropping a wreath in the water as a tribute to Naval Veterans. The final ceremony is at the Legion Post 368, followed by a community chicken BBQ lunch.  Kids are invited to ride in the Morenci Memorial Day Parade again this year. To show appreciation and patriotism, all are encouraged to dress in red, white, and blue and decorate their bikes, wagons, or strollers. Golf carts are permitted only if the driver is 18 years or older.  Parade line up is at Wakefield Park on May 29 at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. with the parade following. The parade route is east on Main St. turning north on North St./M156, ending at Oak Grove Cemetery. To be respectful of the fallen soldiers, no candy will be thrown.
The student-planned and run Farmers market will be a one-day event from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at Wakefield Park.

​Three candidates filed a petition to fill the mayoral post: current council member Jeff Lampson, former mayor Bill Foster, and former councilor Tracy Schell.  To fill the single 2-year term for City Council, there were three candidates who filed a petition: Perry Cox, Gary Pfund, and incumbent council member Kori Christle, who was appointed to fill a vacancy in February.  The three open 4-year term positions were filed by incumbent city councilors Jerome Bussell and Diane Molitierno, as well as Tess Stiver. These candidates will be on the November ballot unopposed.  A primary election will take place in August to narrow down the mayoral and 2-year City Council seat race from three candidates to two.

​In addition to regular business hours, the City of Morenci Offices will be open 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 for the purposes of registering to vote in the special election or turn in absentee ballots.

The Morenci City Council will hold a ​special meeting of the Finance and Legal Committee on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 7:30 a.m. at the City of Morenci Offices, 118 Orchard Street, Morenci, MI 49256.
On Tuesday, May 2, voters in the Morenci school district will be asked to renew an operating millage to allow the district to assess the full 18-mills on non-homestead property, such as vacation homes, apartment buildings, rental homes and commercial/industrial property. The annual request is the only issue on the May 2 ballot.
The City of Morenci has partnered with Thomas P. Miller and Associates (TPMA) to complete a market research study focused on meeting local retail needs.   “This is a first step to getting the baseline information that grocers and other retailers will need to make decisions on locating to Morenci,” said Heather Sarnac, Director of Community and Economic Development for the City of Morenci.   The study will include an analysis of available data about potential retail needs, such as grocery and hardware, that exist in the Morenci area. The study will include information regarding infrastructure, distribution, consumer markets, requirements, and gaps and barriers. TPMA will provide the city with best practices from across the country.   "The TPMA team is proud to work alongside city staff on this project. Efforts are already underway, and we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality analysis we can. Community impact isn’t just a core value of our firm: it is a core value of our project team,” said Lindsay Bloos, Senior Consultant and Project Lead.   TPMA anticipates an on-site visit in July to present findings to the City Council, tour sites, and meet with City staff regarding potential next steps for retail business attraction.
