The City of Morenci has been selected by the Lenawee Great Start Collaborative to be the recipient of a StoryWalk® installation at Wakefield Park. This project is made possible thanks to a literacy grant received by Lenawee Great Start through the State of Michigan.
Morenci is one of four communities in Lenawee County chosen to receive a StoryWalk® installation, which aims to promote literacy and outdoor recreation simultaneously. The concept involves placing laminated pages from children's books in aluminum picture book frames along a path. As visitors walk the path, they are directed to the next page in the story, creating an engaging and educational experience for readers of all ages.
Our StoryWalk® at Wakefield Park will feature 18 stands positioned around the playground area. Every month, Lenawee Great Start Collaborative will rotate the selection of books, offering something new to discover with each visit. The City is working closely with the Stair District Library to coordinate the book choices, aligning them with relevant programming and seasonal events.
To celebrate the installation of the StoryWalk®, the City of Morenci and Lenawee Great Start Collaborative are hosting a Grand Opening event on Saturday, May 18, at 11:00 a.m. The event will take place on the east side of the playground during the Morenci Area Schools Farmer's Market. Great Start will host a table at the Farmer's Market, offering an activity and distributing free books to attendees. The City of Morenci extends a warm invitation to the community to join in the celebration and express gratitude to Great Start for their generous investment in Morenci's literacy initiatives.
