Update

The City of Morenci is currently undertaking improvements to our water treatment system to ensure the highest quality water for our residents. As announced in our June 10, 2024, Public Notice, the City of Morenci’s Water Treatment Plant is bypassing iron removal filtration to replace the iron removal filter media in our system’s four filtration tanks. With support from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and funding from a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), these upgrades aim to reduce iron levels in our water to almost zero.

Progress on the upgrades is proceeding well. The installation of new access points on all four filtration tanks has been completed. During this process, some wear and buildup in older parts of the system were identified, which are currently being evaluated for necessary repairs to ensure continued efficiency. The timeline for completing these upgrades is estimated at 4-6 weeks. Throughout this process, the City of Morenci maintains its commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of our drinking water. Daily testing continues to confirm that water remains safe for consumption, despite any temporary aesthetic changes residents may notice. As the project progresses, residents will be kept informed of updates or changes. For more information or questions, please contact the City of Morenci at (517) 458-6828.
