​In December 2021, City Council authorized the City Administrator to ratify a new refuse contract with Modern Waste Systems, Inc, the sole company who submitted a bid for refuse service at that time. The contract began February 1, 2022 and continues through February 1, 2027 and includes a rate increase each year of the contract. The City is beginning the second year, which includes a $0.69 increase per unit. The current refuse rate is $14.75 per month per unit and the new refuse rate is $15.44 per month per unit.

Consumers Energy continues to work on restoring power to the City of Morenci. According to their website, restoration is estimated for Sunday, February 26 or Monday, February 27, depending on your location in town. Please visit the Consumers Energy Outage Center for the most up-to-date information: https://www.consumersenergy.com/outages/outage-center City of Morenci DPW and Fire Department crews have cleared trees and branches from City streets. If a street tree falls onto private property, the City will remove it. If you have a blocked street or fallen tree to report, please call (517)759-0004. We are exploring options for a citywide brush pick up. In the meantime, residents are welcome to drop off brush behind the DPW facility located at 597 W. Chestnut St. (north of Wakefield Park). As a reminder, trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner. It is advised to contact your insurance carrier for any property damage incurred from the ice storm. Warming centers are currently available in Adrian at The Salvation Army, (217 W. Church St) and in Hudson at Sacred Heart Church (207 S. Market St) and Wesleyan Church (229 Hill St). We will be identifying other local facilities as resources become available. Ohio and portions of Adrian have power for essential food and fuel needs. To request a welfare check on a neighbor or family member, please call (517)263-0524 and select option 0. Oak Grove Cemetery is closed until further notice.

In 2021, the City of Morenci was awarded a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) in the amount of $2M for water system and sanitary upgrades, as well as surface pavement on Locust and Salisbury Streets. The project would also include a new water plant lift station and upgraded iron removal filter media. During the application period, the consulting engineer’s estimated cost for the project was $2M for construction, with a match of roughly $400,000 by the City of Morenci for design and engineering costs. Bids were received in the Summer of 2022 and were much higher than the engineers anticipated, with overall project cost being $4.2M. Several other municipalities receiving the CDBG have experienced this outcome, and for that reason the MEDC increased the grant award to $2.5M. The MEDC does not allow for a change in project scope to reduce costs. Therefore, along with the increased award from the MEDC, the City will fill the funding gap through a $1.9M bond and use the opportunity to make further upgrades. These will include radio-read water meters that will provide more accurate and timely readings and a working vacuum truck for the DPW. The City of Morenci is committed to maintaining quality water standards. In order to complete these vital capital improvement updates, a Resolution for the Intent to Bond was approved by City Council at the January 2023 regular meeting.
